  4.     The briefingplays on "head up" displays and the ready room screens. A
  5.     captive BUG WARRIOR clicks and shrieks as FEDERAL SCIENTISTS
  6.     torture it. The troopers cheer.
  7.  
  8.                 OFFICIAL VOICE
  9.         Everyday Federal scientists are looking for
  10.         new ways to kill bugs and you can help...
  11.  
  12.     The head scientists turns and speaks to camera. It's Carl.
  13.     Johnny and Dizzy share an amazed grin, noticing a difference in
  14.     their old friend, something that speaks of... authority.
  15.  
  16.                 CARL
  17.         To defeat the enemy, we must know the
  18.         enemy. Take for instance your basic
  19.         Arachnid warrior. Minimal IQ, armored, 
  20.         completely lethal. You can blow a limb off...
  21.  
  22.     Carl picks up apulse gun and blows one of the bugs legs off.
  23.     The insect screams.
  24.  
  25.                 CARL
  26.         ... and it's still 86% combat effec-tive.
  27.         But here's a tip: Aim for the nerve stem
  28.         and put it down for good.
  29.  
  30.     Carl fires again. The bug kicks and squeals as it dies.
  31.     Carl tosses the pulse gun aside.
  32.  
  33.                 CARL
  34.         Now while you are out killing bugs,
  35.         we want you to be our eyes and ears.
  36.         The bugs use some kind of plasma burst
  37.         to divert meteors and aim them toward Earth.
  38.         We need to know how they do this. If you
  39.         encounter any plasma, report it immediately
  40.         to your superior. Good luck and good hunting !
  41.  
  42.     The briefing ends as klaxons sound.
  43.  
  44.                 P.A. (O.S.)
  45.         This is the Captain speaking.
  46.         All personnel prepare for drop.We
  47.         are at D minus three and counting.
  48.  
  49.                 LT. WILLY
  50.         Move out !
  51.  
  52.     Johnny and the other troopers climb into capsules on the port track.
  53.     Dizzy gives him "thumbs up". The capsule seals as it moves with 
  54.     the others down the firing tube.
  55.  
  56. 101    INT    CAPSULE - JOHNNY
  57.  
  58.     gets the shakes as the capsule bumps and booms toward the firing
  59.     tube. Lt. Willy appears on the "head up" display.
  60.  
  61.                 LT. WILLY
  62.         Smash the entire area, kill anything that
  63.         has more'n a couple legs , and don't any
  64.         of you loafers come back aboard with
  65.         unexpended bombs. Get me ?
  66.  
  67.                 JOHNNY ET AL
  68.         Yes, sir !
  69.  
  70.                 FIRE CONTROL (O.S.)
  71.         Five seconds...
  72.  
  73.     Sweat rolls down his face, hyperventilation... WHAM !
  74.  
  75. 102    EXT    SPACE - KLENDATHU ORBIT - SILVER CAPSULES
  76.  
  77.     stream toward Klendathu from the rear tubes starships of Bull Run.
  78.     We move down the line past Mannerheim, Dauntless, George Marshall,
  79.     and Yamamoto to the Rodger Young.

  81. 103    INT    RODGER YOUNG - COMMAND AND CONTROL - CARMEN
  82.  
  83.     holds Rodger Young in tight maneuver. Suddenly, a burst of BLUE BUG PLASMA
  84.     rips past the starboard bow.
  85.  
  86.                 CARMEN
  87.         Plasma, ma'am... from the planet.
  88.  
  89.                 DELADIER
  90.         Bug Batteries... According to Military 
  91.         Intelligence, it'll be random and light.
  92.         Drop status ?
  93.  
  94.                 ZANDER
  95.         Drop is 35% complete, ma'am.
  96.  
  97.     Two more bursts of bug plasma streak past.
  98.  
  99.                 DELADIER
  100.         Steady as she goes, Number 1.

  102. 104    EXT    KLENDATHU - HIGH ATMOSPERE - NIGHT - THE CAPSULES

  104.     burn when they hit atmosphere, outer skin tearing away in big silver sheets.

  106. 105    INT    CAPSULE - NIGHT - JOHNNY
  107.  
  108.     takes in ENTRY DATA from the heads up display.
  109.  
  110.                 GUIDANCE COMPUTER (V.O.)
  111.         ...surface in twenty-fivr seconds
  112.         ...LZ has been identified
  113.         ...beacon is in place...

  115. 106    INT    RODGER YOUNG - COMMAND AND CONTROL - CARMEN
  116.  
  117.     watches nervously as deadly bursts of bug plasma fill the heavens around the
  118.     battle group. Below, the surface of Klendathu fairly bistles with outgoing
  119.     defensive fire.
  120.  
  121.                 DELADIER
  122.         This isn't random or light.
  123.         Someone made amistake...!
  124.  
  125.                 ZANDER
  126.         That's it, we're empty ma'am !
  127.  
  128.     Out the front screens, a blast from below hits George Marshall amidships
  129.     and it reels into Yamamoto. Both starships begin to burn.
  130.  
  131.                 DELADIER
  132.         Someone made a big goddam mistake !
  133.         Get us out of here, Number 1 !
  134.  
  135.     Carmen dodges past burning ships, avoids collision with Dauntless,
  136.     and then KA-WHAM !    they're hit. Carmen flies out of her
  137.     station and into CAMERA hard.
  138.  
  139. 107    EXT    KLENDATHU - CLOUD LAYER - NIGHT - THE SECOND SKIN
  140.  
  141.     tears away. Johnny is sitting on air.
  142.  
  143.                 GUIDANCE COMPUTER (V.O.)
  144.         ...surface in fifteen seconds...
  145.         deploying chute now...
  146.  
  147.     The chute pops. Across the sky, lit by outgoing bug plasma, he can see hundreds
  148.     of cap troopers in ordered rows drifting down into the cloud layer. 
  149.     It's quiet in the clouds, then:
  150.  
  151. 108    EXT    KLENDATHU - NIGHT - FROM THE AIR - JOHNNY
  152.  
  153.     looks down as he passes out of the clouds and sees the battlefield.
  154.     Plasma blasts exploode into the sky. THOUSANDS OF BUGS boil
  155.     out of the ground to defend against the invader.
  156.  
  157.                 GUIDANCE COMPUTER (V.O.)
  158.         ...surface in five... four ... three...
  159.  
  160.     Johnny burns his chute off, drops the last hundred feet and lands 
  161.     on the bounce.
  162.  
  163. 109    EXT    KLENDATHU - NIGHT - JOHNNY'S POV - THE FLASH PULSE
  164.     
  165.     of bug batteries, screaming voices on the com, concussions shaking the ground.
  166.     None of it compares to the sound of his own racing HEARTBEAT.
  167.     Lieutenant Willy shouts.
  168.  
  169.                 LIEUTENANT WILLY
  170.         Up there on the ridge ! We'll nuke those bug positions
  171.         from theAAAAAAAA !
  172.  
  173.     A HOPPER (an airborne Arachnid warrior with powerful rear legs and "pop out"
  174.     wings for gliding) lands on Lieutenant Willy and cracks his head like a nut.
  175.  
  176.                 ACE
  177.         KILL IT !
  178.  
  179.     Johnny and Ace open fire, backing away. Pulse rounds tear it apart, bug guts
  180.     gushing.
  181.  
  182.                 JOHNNY
  183.         Lieutenant's bought the farm.
  184.         Where's the Sarge...?
  185.  
  186.                 ACE
  187.         I didn't see him !
  188.  
  189.     Now comes a flood of WORKERS building ever advancing fortifications,
  190.     and with them, hundreds of deadly ARACHNID WARRIORS.
  191.  
  192.                 KITTEN SMITH
  193.         Here they come...!
  194.  
  195.                 DIZZY
  196.         Ace, what're we doing ?
  197.  
  198.                 ACE
  199.         I uh... uh...
  200.  
  201.     Dizzy and the others open fire simultanously. The whole area goes white hot
  202.     in the magnesium flash of so many pulse cannons. Shujumi fires wildly at 
  203.     advancing insects.
  204.  
  205.                 SHUJUMI
  206.         You want some ? Here's some !
  207.         C'MON !
  208.  
  209.                 JOHNNY
  210.         Don't waste your ammon on the 
  211.         workers !
  212.  
  213.     Shujumi can't hear. A warrior finds him, rips his leg off, hurls him back
  214.     into the waiting jaws of the oncoming bugs.
  215.  
  216.                 SHUJUMI
  217.         AAAAAAAAAAAA !
  218.  
  219.     He fights, screaming. A claw reaches for his face, ripping the top of his head off.
  220.  
  221.                 KATRINA
  222.         Let's get out of here !
  223.  
  224.     Now the ground opens behind her and a huge (6 meters) TANKER BUG 
  225.     lumbers out of the ground, it's funnel-shaped snout extruding above
  226.     multiple eyes.
  227.  
  228.                 DIZZY
  229.         Look out !
  230.  
  231.     The tanker bug sprays and hits Katrina. She screams, as her legs melt out
  232.     from under her.
  233.  
  234.                 KATRINA
  235.         AAAAAAAAAAAAA !
  236.  
  237.     Warriors converge to feed on her. Ace wants to help her, but Johnny blocks him.
  238.  
  239.                 JOHNNY
  240.         C'mon, Katrina was right. We 
  241.         gotta get out of here !
  242.  
  243. 110    EXT    KLENDATHU - NIGHT - JOHNNY
  244.  
  245.     and the other survivors on the bounce. The entire surface of Klendathu seems
  246.     to be churning with insects as more and more bugs come to the surface to
  247.     repel the invasion.
  248.  
  249.                 JOHNNY
  250.         It's a general retreat ! The boats are
  251.         coming down.
  252.  
  253.     They come to the rear lines where the Net Correspondent and his
  254.     CAMERAMAN are doing live coverage of the invasion.
  255.  
  256.                 NET CORRESPONDENT
  257.         We've just landed here on what cap troopers 
  258.         are calling the "Big K" with the 6th Mobile
  259.         Infantery Division. It's an ugly planet, a bug
  260.         planet, a planet hostile to life as we kow iGKKKKK !
  261.  
  262.     The Correspondent is cut in half by a warrior. Johnny blows it away.
  263.  
  264.                 JOHNNY
  265.         C'mon, let's go ! ON THE BOUNCE !
  266.  
  267.     The cap troopers move out. Kitten Smith looks up as a purple beacon
  268.      streaks acroos thr sky.
  269.  
  270.                 KITTEN SMITH
  271.         I can see the beacon...!
  272.  
  273.                 ACE
  274.         Retrieval !
  275.  
  276.     A hopper pounces on Kitten Smithm, and he goes down screaming.
  277.  
  278.                 JOHNNY
  279.         KITTEN !
  280.  
  281.     Johnny touches down, stares in horror as Kitten Smith's head rolls past his 
  282.     fee. Johnny opens up with his pulse cannon. The hopper attacks, puts a claw
  283.     right through Johnny's thigh.
  284.  
  285.                 JOHNNY
  286.         AAAAAAAAAAAAA !
  287.  
  288.     Crushing jaws close around him, crushing, cutting his flesh. Johnny brings the muzzle
  289.     of the pulse gun under the hopper's nerve stem and SPLAT !    blows its head apart.
  290.  
  291.                 DIZZY
  292.         Johnny !    JOHNNY !    WHERE ARE YOU ?
  293.         JOHNNY !    Johnny...!
  294.  
  295.     But Dizzy can't find Johnny, and soon she's lost in the smoke. Johnny looks
  296.     down at the terrible hole in his leg where bright arterial blood gushes.
  297.  
  298.                 JOHNNY
  299.         Medic... MEDIC...!
  300.  
  301.     Now two more Arachnid warriors close in on him through the enveloping
  302.     smoke. He fires his pulse rifle empty, and dropping it, crawls desperately,
  303.     dragging his useless leg.
  304.  
  305.                 JOHNNY
  306.         Oh, God... Oh, God, help me...
  307.         please help me...!
  308.  
  309.     A third Arachnid warrior rears up in front of him, deadly jaws slashing down
  310.     toward him, when suddenly it is blown to pieces in the blinding blast of a
  311.     point-blank pulse cannon.
  312.  
  313.                 VOICE (O.S.)
  314.         Take my hand !
  315.  
  316.     Johnny reaches out. A STEEL HAND takes his, dragging him back as bugs
  317.     attack. His rescuers's pulse cannon thunders overhead. Bug parts fly as 
  318.     insects swarm in for the kill.
  319.  
  320.                                 FADE OUT
  321.  
  322. 111    FROM THE FEDERAL NET - 100, 000 DEAD IN ONE HOUR !
  323.  
  324.     Actual pictures of the battlefield, man and insect lying dead together on the blood
  325.     drenched plains of Klendathu.
  326.  
  327.                 OFFICIAL VOICE
  328.         Crsisis for Humankind ! Fleet official 
  329.         admit they underestimated the 
  330.         Arachnid's defensive capability.

  333. 112    SKY MARSHALL RESIGNS !

  335. Retiring Sky Marshall Dienes salutes incoming SKY MARSHALL TEHAT MERU, 75,
  336.     bfore a gathering of the Federal Council.

  339.         Accepting responsibility for Klendathu,
  340.         Sky Marshall Dienes resigns. His successor,
  341.         Sky Marshall Tahat Meru, outlines her new
  342.         strategy.

  345.         Until we understand the bug better, we 
  346.         must proceed with caution...
  347.         We can ill afford another Klendathu.

  349. 113    SCIENTISTS SUSPECT MYSTERIOUS BRAIN BUGS !
  350.  
  351.     FEDERAL SCIENTISTS display an organizational chart of the 
  352.     Arachnid species topped by a QUESTION MARK.
  353.  
  354.                 OFFICIAL VOICE
  355.         To explain the intelligent military actions
  356.         of the Arachnids, Federal Scientists postulate
  357.         the existence of a leadership caste...BRAIN BUGS !

  359. 114    SOMETIMES LOVED ONES DIE FOR A GOOD REASON !

  361.     Names scroll by designated KIA, WIA, and MIA accordingly.

  365.         incapacitated by Federal Service are entitled 
  366.         to benefits ! If you see the name of a loved one,

  372.     limps to port, a huge chunk ripped out of its mid-section. Although stable,
  373.     she flies inverted.

  376.         Ticonderoga, this is Rodger Young requesting
  377.         approach vector...

  380.         Affirmative, Rodger Young...one zero zero

  386.     stare at the BATTLE-SCARED STARSHIPS and BURNT-OUT HULKS that line the 
  387.     docks of Ticonderoga.

  389.                 CARMEN
  390.         You know, we're lucky to be alive.
  391.  
  392.     A bloody bandage wraps Carmen's head. Zander nods grimly.

  394. 117    INT    RODGER YOUNG - GANGWAY - THE DEAD BODIES

  396.     of CREWMEN and CAP TROOPERS are being off-loaded via conveyer belt.
  397.     Zander and Carmen make their way up the steep companionway beside the
  398.     ghastly conveyer belt.

  400.                 ZANDER
  401.         Give me hand, willya ?
  402.  
  403.     Carmen takes his hand. Zander kisses her.
  404.  
  405.                 ZANDER
  406.         I was thinking. Maybe we should get
  407.         married, Carmen.
  408.  
  409.                 CARMEN
  410.         You weren't thinking...you were dreaming !
  411.  
  412.                 ZANDER
  413.         If we're gonna be a team, why not be a
  414.         real team ?

  416.                 CARMEN
  417.         There's a war on. I want a command,

  426.     Carmen lets his hand go and leaps through the hatch. Zander falls back 
  427.     onto the conveyer belt, finds himself eyeball-to-eyeball with a horribly
  428.     maimed trooper, scrambles to get off.

  430. 118    INT    BATTLE STATION TICONDEROGA - COMMON AREA - ZANDER
  431.  
  432.     joins Carmen in the crowded common area where dead bodies compete for space
  433.     with wounded awaiting triage. Survivors watch casualty lists scroll ba on a 
  434.     Federal Net terminal.
  435.  
  436.                 ZANDER
  437.         Fleet encourages marriages among flight
  438.         officers. You'd probably get a promotion
  439.         out of it.
  440.  
  441.                 CARMEN
  442.         Funny...
  443.  
  444.                 ZANDER
  445.         I'm not kidding. Marriage is -
  446.  
  447.                 CARMEN
  448.         No, funny there's almost no wounded at all.
  449.  
  450.                 ZANDER
  451.         Hey, bugs don't take prisoners.
  452.  
  453.     Carmen looks at the words at the Net terminal: WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW 
  454.     MORE ? She bites her lip, enters Johnny's name. In an instant, she has the news:
  455.     RICO, JOHN D. - KIA
  456.  
  457.                 CARMEN
  458.         Oh no.
  459.  
  460.     Tears fill her eyes.
  461.  
  462.                 ZANDER
  463.         Carmen...?
  464.  
  465.                 CARMEN
  466.         Excuse me...!
  467.  
  468.     She rushes away. Zander looks at Johnny's name on the screen, shrugs, presses
  469.     the ERASE button.
  470.  
  471. 119    INT    TICONDEROGA - CORRIDOR - ZANDER
  472.  
  473.     finds Carmen, sagging against a wall, weepimg.
  474.  
  475.                 ZANDER
  476.         I'm sorry, Carmen.
  477.  
  478.                 CARMEN
  479.         Please, I... Everybody's lost someone
  480.         by now. This shouldn't be any
  481.         different...
  482.  
  483.     Zander puts an arm around her. She holds on tight.
  484.  
  485.                 CARMEN
  486.         No, I... Oh, Zander, I'm a fool.
  487.  
  488.                 ZANDER
  489.         You're upset, that's alright.
  490.  
  491.     Zander kisses her hair. Tears roll down her face.
  492.  
  493.                 CARMEN
  494.         No, don't you see ? No one can wait for
  495.         anything anymore... You're right...
  496.         We should get married...
  497.  
  498.     Zander holds Carmen as she sobs, feeling lucky.
  499.  
  500.                             DISSOLVE TO:

  502.     120    INT    STASIS TANK - DAY CYCLE - JOHNNY'S BODY
  503.  
  504.     floats, suspended in fluid, mouth hanging open, his skin white as death.
  505.     A low underwater KNOCKING wakes him. He opens his eyes and sees
  506.     Ace and Dizzy outside the tank.
  507.  
  508.     Ace holds up a KIA list, pointing at Johnny's name, laughing: Rico, John V - KIA.
  509.     Their voices are distant and garbled. Dizzy cups her hands against the side of the
  510.     tank.
  511.  
  512.                 DIZZY
  513.         Two more days.
  514.  
  515.     Johnny's wounds are now mostly scars except for his leg where delicate robotic
  516.     arms culture layers of new tissue. Johnny gives a weak thumbs up. The knocking
  517.     sound continues.
  518.  
  519.     Johnny turns. A STEEL HAND taps the side of the tank. Johnny grins, astonished.
  520.     The man wearing it is his former high school teacher, now a Lieutenant, Jean Rasczak.
  521.  
  522. 121    EXT    SPACE - AQZ - A BATTLE GROUP
  523.  
  524.     consisting of STARSHIPS, their tender, FREIGHTERS and other SUPPLY CRAFT.
  525.  
  526. 122    INT    TROOP TRANSPORT - M.I. QUARTERS - JOHNNY
  527.  
  528.     stows his gear along with Ace and Dizzy. Acroos the room, a collection of
  529.     battle-hardened vets check out the newcomers.
  530.  
  531.                 ACE
  532.         Dizzy says you two knew this Rasczak
  533.         character in Buenos Aires...
  534.  
  535.                 JOHNNY
  536.         He was our teacher...
  537.         He was great.
  538.  
  539.                 ACE
  540.         Yeah, well, I hear he's a real
  541.         nutbuster.
  542.  
  543.                 DIZZY
  544.         The Roughnecks killed more bugs than
  545.         any other outfit in 2nd Brigade...
  546.         Only took 15% casualties on Big K.
  547.  
  548.     They size up the Roughnecks. There are scars, power prosthetics, and one,
  549.     big SUGAR WATKINS, 26, wears a bug claw on a chain around his neck.
  550.  
  551.                 JOHNNY
  552.         Seeing as how we're about all that's
  553.         left of  1st Brigade, you'd have to call
  554.         that an improvement.
  555.             (to Sugar Watkins)
  556.         You top kick ?
  557.  
  558.                 SUGAR WATKINS
  559.         Are you kidding ? They always get killed.
  560.         You want the job ?
  561.  
  562.                 JOHNNY
  563.         I wouldn't mind.
  564.  
  565.     CORPORAL BIRDIE, 24, turns, gives Johnny the once over.
  566.  
  567.                 BIRDIE
  568.         I would. Nice earring.
  569.  
  570.     Dizzy looks her over. Not too big, but she's tough.
  571.  
  572.                 DIZZY
  573.         Where you been besides Big K ?
  574.  
  575.                 BIRDIE
  576.         Outer rings. Zegema Beach.
  577.  
  578.                 JOHNNY
  579.         I always wanted to go to Zegema Beach.
  580.  
  581.                 SUGAR WATKINS
  582.         Good luck. It's not there anymore.
  583.  
  584.                 ACE
  585.         Is your Lieutenant as bad as they say ?

  587.     Birdie belts him, and Ace goes down.
  588.

  590.         No one talks about the Lieutenant that way.
  591.         He saved my life !

  593.     Ace jumps up, ready to fight, but other Roughnecks block him.

  601.     Johnny and Dizzy shrug. Ace's on his own.

  604.         Sounds like he is quite a guy.

  609.         Attention !

  611.     Everyone snaps to. Rasczak enters.
  612.

  614.         This is for you new people. I only 
  615.         have two rules. Rule one, everyone
  616.         fights. Rule two, no one quits.
  617.         If you don't do your job, I'll kill you
  618.         myself. Do you get me ?

  620.                 JOHNNY, DIZZY AND ACE

  623.     He points at Johnny's earring with his steel hand.
  624.

  626.         Get rid of the jewelry. I hate it.
  627.         Welcome to the Roughnecks.

  630.         Rasczak's Roughnecks !

  632.     The Roughnecks cheer. Rasczak smiles vaguely.

  635.         Alright. There's a new Sky Marshall and
  636.         a new plan. We're gonna clean out the
  637.         systems outlying Klendathu one planet
  638.         at a time. Tomorrow we hit Tango Urilla.
  639.         After Fleet glasses the planet, M.I. mops up.
  640.  
  641. 123    EXT    TANGO URILLA - DAY - BUG WARRIORS
  642.  
  643.     stand sentry on earthworks that tower the entrance to their colony where an
  644.     endless line of WORKERS enter bearing foodstuff appropriate to this exotic
  645.     jungle planet.
  646.  
  647.     A distant sound. A warrior looks up, curious. Suddenly a FORMATION OF TAC

  652.     dark glass. Ash turns the sky red. The out of the smoke come Rasczak and his
  653.     Roughnecks.

  656.         Spread out, teams of three. When you 
  657.         locate a bug hole, secure it, gas it,
  658.         and close it.

  662.     streak by overhead. On the ground, Johnny, Dizzy and Ace are on the bounce.
  663.     Ace spots a bug hole where workers and warrors have broken through the
  664.     glassed surface.

  669.     Rockets take out warriors. Bug guts go flying. Dizzy sets workers on fire.
  670.     Johnnx and Ace step over burning bug carcasses to the rim of the hole and
  671.     fire their gas rounds.

  674.         Fire in the hole !

  676.     Johnny drops an H.E. round, and they're in the air when the explosion collapses
  677.     the entrance to the bug city.

  696.     The cao troopers let the bugs have it, but the insects keep coming, the living
  697.     crawling over the dead, and now, trudging up out of the ground, comes a
  698.     TANKER BUG.

  700.                 JOHNNY
  701.         WATCH OUT !

  703.     The tanker bug starts to spray, creating a toxic perimeter around the hole.
  704.     Rasczak arrives just as Birdie takes a chemical hit, falling to ground minus
  705.     an arm, screaming.

  707.                 BIRDIE
  708.         AAAAAAAAAAAAA !

  710.     Johnny jumps, landing behind the tanker bug in the mouth of the hole. It turns 
  711.     with surprising speed. Johnny flips up onto its back, cracks its armor with his
  712.     pulse cannon.

  714.                 RASCZAK
  715.         Sugar, in for pick up !
  716.  
  717.     Rasczak and Sugar Watkins pull Birdie to safety. Johnny fires a rocket into 
  718.     the hole he's made in the tanker bug's back, and jumps clear. KA-WHAP !
  719.     The big bug explodes.
  720.  
  721.                 RASCZAK
  722.         Gas that hole and close it !
  723.  
  724.     The Roughnecks fire gas rockets into the bug hole. Johnny touches down
  725.     beside Rasczak.

  727.                 RASCZAK
  728.         Where'd you learn to do that, soldier ?

  730.                 JOHNNY
  731.         Uni High Tigers, sir. Don't you
  732.         remember ? I was captain of the
  733.         team.

  735.                 RASCZAK
  736.         I'm not interested in nostalgia, Rico,
  737.         I need a corporal. You're it until you're
  738.         dead or I find someone better.

  740.     Rasczak turns away, gives Birdie prosthetic thumps up as she is carried past
  741.     to meet an arriving skimmer.

  747.     Dizzy and Ace gather around Johnny, clap him on the back.

  774.     Roughnecks head out on the bounce.

  778.     and the others look down a sheer cliff on the bug battery, a charred circular
  779.     pit some ten meters across. Inside, something is moving.

  781.                 JOHNNY
  782.         What kind of stinkin' bug is that ?

  784.     Johnny jumps the magnification on his "head up". Down in the pit, a giant
  785.     translucent PLASMA BUG rears out of one of the subterranean tunnels
  786.     that ring the battery.

  788.                 SUGAR WATKINS
  789.         You never seen how they do it before ?
  790.  
  791.     Johnny shakes his head. Swollen BREEDER BUGS gather around the 
  792.     plasma bug to inject it with their catalytic jelly.
  793.  
  794.                 ACE
  795.         Agghh ! It's making me sick...!
  796.  
  797.     The plasma bug writhes in pain and begins to swell, color changing from
  798.     yellow to blue in accordance with some violent internal chemical reaction.
  799.  
  800.                 SUGAR WATKINS
  801.         It's gonna pop !
  802.  
  803.     WOMP ! The plasma bug explodes in its cauldron. A blast of bug plasma
  804.     streaks past them towards the heavens. Now a new plasma bug crawls into
  805.     the pit to begin the cycle anew.

  807.                 GILLESPIE
  808.         Sir, look !
  809.  
  810.     Sergeant Gillespie points. A hole opens near the battery and dozens of warriors
  811.     rampage out of the ground and up the cliff face toward the Roughneck position.

  814.         We must be right over the colony.
  815.         Let's get some air support, eh ?
